We welcome the announcement by the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water and Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, that the 2015-16 Victorian Budget will include $13.5 million to build a safe harbour at Portarlington.
The initiative will fulfil longstanding plans to enhance the existing marine infrastructure at Portarlington.
Stage 1 of the $15 million Portarlington Safe Harbour Development commenced in February and is expected to be completed in June.
The project will support local jobs during construction, and enable a high quality precinct for boating and recreation to be developed, improving the amenity of the waterfront.
Portarlington is the home of Port Phillip Bay’s thriving aquaculture industry. The new 175-metre pier will boost the mussel farming industry, allowing for increased access and vehicle load limits.
Pedestrian and aquaculture industry access to the pier will be maintained throughout the project. Short term closures will protect visitor and contractor safety when equipment is being moved around the construction area.
This is great news for Portarlington and the whole Bellarine region.
