Bellarine Bayside hosted a community planting day at the Indented Head Wetlands on Sunday 28th June. It was a great success with 750 plants added to the site, which marks the completion of the planting phase of the wetlands rehabilitation. A young holiday-maker walking past with his grandmother enthusiastically asked if he could join in. With the help of Bellarine Bayside staff he promptly planted half a dozen grasses and they informally named this small pocket of the site Jackson Corner to thank him for his contribution.
Community planting days are providing a great platform for the public to liaise directly with Bellarine Bayside staff to explore and identify potential new options for the Bellarine Peninsula. After completion of the planting volunteers discussed with CEO Kevin Craig (pictured below) the importance of the site, particularly the increase in bird life frequenting the wetlands since the program’s inception.
Bellarine Bayside will be holding another planting day at 10 am on Sunday 26 July at Lower Bluff, St Leonards that will focus on planting wildflowers. All are welcome to attend and learn about these important species of which little natural habitat remains on the Bellarine. Contact Garry Kendell on 0488 592 761 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
