On Friday 24th July Bellarine Bayside Chairman Diane James and committee members Elaine Carbines and Lindsay Ellis, together with CEO Kevin Craig and a range of local dignitaries attended the official opening of Stage 1 of the $15 million Portarlington Safe Harbour project. Stage 1 was opened by Bellarine MP Lisa Neville together with Parks Victoria Chairman Andrew Fairley. The new 175 m section of the Portarlington Pier will boost the mussel industry as it improves access and vehicle load limits. The next stage includes the installation of more facilities to grow the mussel, oyster and scallop industries.
The Geelong Advertiser reports that the upgrade will provide the infrastructure needed for a future ferry service which will kickstart the search for a ferry operator willing to run a commuter service from the Bellarine Peninsula to Melbourne.
The project is expected to be completed within 18 months. For further information on the Portarlington Safe Harbour project please visit the G21 website.
