Bellarine Bayside’s Annual Community Meeting was a great success on Friday evening with more than 65 attendees from Indented Head, St Leonards and Portarlington. Committee Chair, Diane James AM, opened the evening with an update on the organisation’s achievements over the past year before introducing Wadawurrung elder, Uncle Bryon Powell.
As a traditional cutodian of the land, Uncle Bryon gave a Welcome to Country speech delving into local indigenous history and culture spanning 60 000 years. It was a fascinating journey that synchronised beautifully with Adam Ford’s account of working with Bellarine Bayside on the Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
Our guest speaker for the evening was Adam Ford – archaeologist, TV host and Cultural Heritage Adviser to Bellarine Bayside for some eight years. Adam has worked on many sites both internationally and in Australia including the Kelly Gang siege and gun battle site in Glenrowan. Bellarine Bayside was praised for its proactive response to cultural heritage after unearthing significant archaeological sites a number of years ago. Our relationship with Adam is on-going and he now credits Bellarine Bayside with being a ‘best-practice’ organisation in cultural heritage matters.
The evening culminated with informal chat amongst attendees whilst devouring a barbecue generously prepared by the Portarlington/Drysdale Lions Club.
